See bulletin Video "A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones." (Proverbs. 14:30) What does it mean? What does this look like? Read through Genesis chapter 30 and you'll see how envy consumed Jacob's family. It wasn't just a competition for who could have the most children, it was a problem with being content with what they had, or didn't have. The envy of Rachel and Leah lead to foolish decisions and continued to rot the already dysfunctional family. Yet our faithful Lord continued to remember His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and now Jacob. Jacob's large family would rapidly grow and ultimately serve God's greater purpose in bringing our promised Savior through this family tree. Isn't that what we need most in our own dysfunctional lives? Solomon's God-given wisdom from Proverbs 14 is right on. Envy never leads to anything healthy. Paul wrote to Timothy, "Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out." (1 Timothy 6:6,7) So what's the point of being so envious of other peoples lives, stuff, things? There's only one thing that lasts, and it lasts forever. Jesus reminds us to do the same thing He told the demon possessed man He had cleansed, "Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you." And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him." (Luke 8:39) Rather than rotting with envy towards others, let's remember that the truth that Christ has given us is TO BE envied! Truth that He has given us a "sound heart," and cleansed our very soul with His own blood! During this season of Lent, let us rejoice in our lasting forgiveness and salvation! Come to the Lord's house to be cleansed by His Word, and return home telling all what great things God our Savior has done for you!
